Eggertsbók (AM 556 a-b 4to) as a whole manuscript mediates and establishes multiple connections between the natural world and the human one, and between familiar and distant geographical places and regions. From the first stages of production in the fifteenth century, Eggertsbók grew out of, and became part of, networks of material, technological, socio-cultural, and ideological exchange that linked familiar and distant places.

With texts copied onto the parchment, a uniquely configured ecology of ideas and textual paths was created within Eggertsbók’s covers. Subsequently, individuals and communities with access to the book became participants in the ongoing process by which Eggertsbók’s narratives existed in state of constant evolution and intertextual adaptation in the specific context of the manuscript and beyond it, in the world of its users.

In this talk, I will explore how this process was characterized by reciprocal influences, not least concerning perceptions of the natural world and geography, real and imagined: the book on its readers, and readers on the book and its contents.
