The written cultural heritage created by medieval scribes is extensive and diverse, encompassing both vernacular and Latin texts. In recent years, research on manuscript material has been expanded in two distinct directions: On one hand, the natural sciences have opened doors to groundbreaking new knowledge about the material aspects of medieval books and fragments. On the other hand, digital technology offers unique opportunities for both analysis and accessibility through digital tools and representation. This lecture will discuss the development of fragment studies, illustrated by two fragmentary liturgical books in Latin copied by Icelandic scribes.
