Call for Papers: Watermarks in Digital Collections
During the last decades, printed catalogues of watermarks have been partially replaced by databases, and new watermark collections are published mainly online in digital form. To present new developments and methods in the field of watermark studies, to establish contact with scholars interested in the field, and to discuss future projects, the International Conference on Watermarks in Digital Collections takes place every two years.
In 2025, the 8th conference will be hosted in Reykjavik, Iceland, by the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies in collaboration with the Bernstein project.
The conference intends to bring together scholars, paper experts, conservators, curators, and others who work in watermark research or are interested in this topic.
All topics on watermarks are welcome, including but not limited to:
- new watermark collections, databases and projects which are either in the planning phase or are already online,
- the history of collections and projects that are connected with the Bernstein portal,
- experiences on well-known recording and digitizing techniques, and
- presentations of new techniques including AI.
Please send an abstract no later than 31 January 2025 to Silvia Hufnagel (silvia@hi.is) and/or Emanuel Wenger (emanuel.wenger@oeaw.ac.at).
Please include a preliminary title, an abstract of 100-300 words, and contact information in one file. The language of the conference is English and the presentations are limited to 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes for discussion.
There is no participation fee, however, presenters and participants are expected to organize and cover the costs for their own travel and accommodations, including the conference dinner and the optional excursion.
Preliminary schedule:
- Thursday, 19 June 2025: conference opening at 10:00, followed by lectures and excursions in Reykjavík, and conference dinner at 19:00.
- Friday, 20 June 2025: lectures and excursions in Reykjavík.
