Summer Course in Manuscript Studies Held in August

The 19th annual International Summer Course in Manuscript Studies was held August 6–15, 2024. This year, the course was attended by 54 students from 17 countries, with instruction provided by 21 teachers. The program covered various aspects of manuscript studies, such as the making of manuscripts, paper, ink, illuminations, and pigments; different styles of writing, spelling, bindings, and abbreviations; manuscript collection, photography, and cataloging; text editions, and dictionary work. Students had the opportunity to both examine and work with manuscripts, including writing on vellum with quill pens and ink.

The summer course is a collaborative project between the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies, the University of Iceland, the National and University Library of Iceland and the University of Copenhagen (Den Arnamagnæanske Samling). It is held annually, alternating between Reykjavík and Copenhagen. This year, classes took place at Edda, Veröld – Vigdís’ House and the National Library. The next summer course will be held next year in Copenhagen.
