Grants for a research stay at the Árni Magnússon Institute in Reykjavík

The governments of Iceland and Denmark have decided to launch a three-year initiative (2026–28) to strengthen international research on manuscripts in Árni Magnússon’s collection, which is preserved at the Árni Magnússon Institute for Icelandic Studies in Reykjavík and the Arnamagnæan Institute at Copenhagen University.

The aim is to prioritize grants to early-career researchers, including doctoral students and post-docs, who work and study outside of Iceland and Denmark, enabling them to work on the manuscripts on site at the collection in Denmark and Iceland. Grants will be given for research stays for the duration of one to six months. The grant amounts to DKK 30,000 / ISK 600,000 per month.

The evaluation of the applications will take equal note of the applicant's background and the research subject. An investigation of one or more manuscripts should be a key factor in the proposed research project.

In 2026 the call is open for applications for research stays at the Árni Magnússon Institute in Reykjavík (only).

The deadline for applications is June 1st 2026.
